Catching on

I think cheering at races is one of my new favorite things. It’s super inspiring! I had a ton of fun cheering at MCM2010 with Thea back in October. This time, I got to cheer her and Ashley (as well as tons of other people) on. I had great company too; I met up with Caitlin and Emily between miles ten and eleven. There were signs, hollering, tissues, swedish fish, and even a “just the tip” joke. Very fun!

It was also great to see my friends looking so strong! Many congrats to Ashley who tweeted shortly after the race that she set a new PR!

Watching races gives me race fever! I really cannot wait for April 13 to roll around so I can sign up for my VA Beach Half (with $13 discount)! It’s going to be so cool to be one of the runners in a few months. Smile

Congrats to everyone who raced today! Y’all make me so proud!

All right, I need to grab some lunch and pack for our night away at the Chesapeake Bay for our one year anniversary – that’s just CRAZAY!

What makes you want to run?

Excellent Mail Day

So yesterday I listed off some of the things that make me happy. I left a big one off the list: MAIL! And I don’t mean bills or credit card offers or catalogs. I mean something hand addressed to me or a package with something new inside. When those two things combine, I am doubly happy! Imagine my surprise when checking the mail and finding out I had not one, but TWO little packages waiting for me.

First off, a few weeks back Target was running a promotion for their beauty department. If you entered your name and mailing information they promised to send you a sample pack with $25 worth of savings and other goodies. Free stuff? Sign me up!

Oh, let’s see what’s in there!

Look at that cute little bag it all came in too! I mean, to mean it was worth it just for the travel lotion and new chapstick!

Up next was a package that combines BOTH of my favorite mail elements: something fun/new and hand addressed to me! One of my favorite DC bloggers, Gwen, had a delicious Dove chocolate giveaway a few weeks ago and I won! (Okay, so this combines mail and winning, so it’s a double win. Or, is that bi-winning?Smile)

IMG_0878I was pretty excited to tear into the box and sample these little treats! They are Chocolate Chipotle-Spiced Caramel Nut Clusters and, yes they are as delicious as they sound!

IMG_0883Buddy was pretty excited too!

YUM! Dove chocolate is one of my favs and the yummy chipotle salt was such a fun addition. If you’re interested in acquiring some chocolates like mine (or another delicious varieties) you can get in touch with Gwen’s Mom Linda who is an independent chocolatier with Dove Chocolate Discoveries.

Buddy recommends it!
(Please note that my sweet little dog did not actually consume chocolates. But man, did he want to!)

What’s your favorite thing to get in the mail?

Fat Tuesday

Happy Fat Tuesday blog world! I texted my parents this morning and my mother reminded me that, for her, every Tuesday is Fat Tuesday. 🙂 I love that woman!

Thanks for weighing in yesterday on what to give up for Lent. I think I’ve definitely decided to nix facebook and cheese for forty days. I’m still undecided on candy. It almost feels like a cop out since I did it last year. The only other things I’ve repeated were things that I struggled with (junk food and meat) and felt challenged right up to the end. Candy didn’t seem that hard last year. So, maybe I’ll just stay away from it (for my own personal well-being) but not nix it entirely via Lent?

I’m actually kinda looking forward to my “facebook fast” as I am curious to see how much time I get back in my life. I’m also interested to see if I use facebook as much after Lent. After giving up things like coke and meat for Lent, I find that I didn’t consume them nearly as much afterwards. And I now consume even less of them for health reasons. I think “weeding out” the excesses in my life is really good for me and since I start a habit during Lent it usually sticks with me. Hopefully I won’t get the shakes or anything from going without cheese. Man, I love cheese. I’m tempted to have mac and cheese or something equally absurd for dinner tonight.

In other news, babies are everywhere. They come in waves y’all! I know people due in April, May, June, July, August, and now October. Yup, crazy sauce. The October baby is a new addition! One of my favorite bloggers (and neighbor to boot), Emily, announced yesterday that she is pregnant. I swear, she’s going to be the cutest pregnant woman ever. This all makes me want to go on Etsy and compulsively purchase baby hats. Seriously y’all!

I finally pulled the trigger on my kettlebell too!

This little guy should be showing up at my place sometime tomorrow. I can’t wait to try out it out! I was cruising around Comcast OnDemand (one of the only redeeming qualities that Comcast has) and I found Jillian Michaels’ Shred It with Weights (level one) available. I love Jillian (even if I hate to mute her on the videos sometimes) so I think I’ll give her workout a whirl once the kettlebell makes its arrival to my place. I anticipate being nice and sore! I’d like to work on strength training twice a week (at least) and hopefully reintroduce some muscle tone into my life.

Work is impatient for me to return, so I’m off. Are you doing anything to celebrate Fat Tuesday? And, a selfish question… since I’m giving up cheese for Lent, should I include things like cottage cheese and cream cheese? Or should I just stick with generic sliced, grated, shredded, etc. cheese?

It has been a wonderful 48 hours y’all!

1. Friday mid-day “run” worked out even better than the previous “run.” Still circuits (4 min run, 2 min walk, 3 min run, 2 min walk – repeat three times) — 3.28 miles in 40 minutes. I can’t wait until I can actually run again!

2. DC Blogger Meet Up at Sweetgreen in Dupont was tremendous fun. I didn’t know a single person when I got there but everyone I met was awesome! I got a chance to sit and chat with Maya, Sarah, and Paige who are all so nice and wonderful. I definitely hope that there is another blogger meet up soon. Now that I know a few folks I won’t feel as awkward just showing up! Many thanks again to Emily (my new neighbor in Old Town) for setting this up!

3. Rabbit. I won’t count this as my success since I really had little to do with it. However, we had some friends over for football and eats again last night. Hubs successfully cooked his first rabbit. Everyone who ate it said it was delicious. (We also had grits, cabbage and roasted green beans on the side.) I am very glad there’s no longer an animal carcass resting in my fridge. That is a success as well!

4. I crossed a threshold in Anna Karenina last night: less than 200 pages to go! I’m still enjoying the story, but I wish I could find the fast forward button.

5. An unexpected Friday night in led to a lot of lazy relaxing. I polished off the third Glee disk and a hunk of Friday Night Lights Episodes. Definitely teared up at the end of the pilot. Loved it and will be watching more of it! I also broke out my knitting needles. Sweet Blair will be teaching me to knit but I thought it might be helpful to bring something I’m “working on” so she can point out good and bad things so I can improve.

6. We’ve planned out our meals for the week = cheap eating before VA Beach. After we finish our coffee, Hubs and I are headed to the grocery store(s) to take care of business. And, who knows, maybe I’ll get him to come for a run with me later?!

Happy Sunday folks! What are you looking forward to most this week? I personally cannot wait to get out of the city for a few days and listen to waves crash on the beach. I hope the weather is great for the holiday weekend!

An October Friday

Two of my favorite things combine: Friday and October. What a recipe for a wonderful day!

The past few days have been busy! My boss took some vacay in Spain leaving me and coworker C to prep for our next job and train up our new staff member (coworker T). After a little doubt, it turns out we’re incredibly capable and that perhaps we even work harder when our boss isn’t around? Who would have thought? Hopefully he’s properly impressed when he returns to work on Monday!

Busy Anna = no time for posts (or much cooking, or many workouts). So, I’m here rectifying that! I actually went for my first “run” in about two months on Tuesday evening. I did circuits (cause this girl needs to ease back into running) after a five minute warm up: 3 minutes running, 2 minutes walking. I increased my speed every other circuit and covered 3.2 miles in 40 minutes. Hopefully I can get enough work done before lunch that I can squeeze in another “run” during my lunch break. My body doesn’t really seem to enjoy running but I love the feeling when I’m done. No other work out I’ve ever tried leaves me feeling the way I do after a run. I also have some race goals and other running related desires so I need to get back on the horse. No more excuses about the heat because fall is settling in nicely! Also, new coworker T co-leads a running group and keeps inviting me to join. I need to not embarass myself when I go!

I cooked yesterday too! So that Hubs could have some dinner (we were all out of leftovers), I put together Kelly’s Enchilada Bake that I mentioned a few posts back. Two servings were frozen immediately — hello lunch next week! Hubs said it was yummy for dinner and I’ll be trying it out for lunch. This weekend we have plans to put together some soup (pumpkin, lentil, veggie??) and poppy seed chicken.

Other things? The third disk of Glee arrived for me yesterday! I can’t wait to find a minute or two to watch an episode. I love that show! I also love finally getting my money’s worth out of Netflix again. I’m so guilty of just letting a movie or disk sit here for a month or two. Oh, and I have a million shows I need to catch up on! The Office, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl! So, moving through Glee makes me happy and speeds me to more lovely tv.

The cold weather is leaving me with crafty urges. This always happens. October arrives and BOOM someone needs to take me to a craft store ASAP! Blair has promised to teach me to knit — we’re talking knit, pearl, cable, and socks! (Socks will be key as Hubs and I often don’t use our heat in the winter. We live in a high rise apt building so it never gets ridiculously cold but a soft, fuzzy pair of socks could definitely help!) Some of the girls at work have also been talking about beading classes. There’s a cute little bead shop down the street from me in Old Town that offers classes on necklaces, bracelets, earrings, you name it. I could use some more jewlery and if I get to make it myself and socialize while I do it? Even better!

Oh yes, and books — my always obsession. While I’ve been plodding through Anna Karenina (still 250 or so pages from the end – ah) I’ve found about a billion new books I want to read. I keep hearing about Hunger Games (on hold at the library) and Operation Dark Heart (newly edited by the Department of Defense). My to-read list on Goodreads is ALWAYS growing. I’ll read a book or two and feel good about taking them off the list — but by that time I’ve added about ten more. 🙂 I need to figure out how to sneak more time into my day to read (work out, cook, bake, knit, catch up on tv). Can someone clone me?

This early October has me excited! Tomorrow I’m headed to meet up with other DC area bloggers for delicious salads and froyo. I’m a little nervous about it (please like me!!!!!) but I’m also looking forward to meeting some amazing new folks. There’s delightful football (and hopefully a Georgia win) and friends coming over for dinner as well on Saturday. Next Friday ushers in a four day weekend (and our trip to VA Beach) so I cannot wait. Cannot wait! Also, highs this weekend won’t get into the 70’s. Hellooooo Fall Weather!

Do you knit? Crochet? Craft it up in any way? What is your favorite? (And, do you wanna come teach me how to do it?!)

Brain Dump

It has been a hot minute and I’ve got so much stuffed in my little head. I don’t wanna overwhelm y’all so I’m gonna try to pull some of it together into a list.

1. Work Success – I survived a week of travel. It was touch and go there for a little bit, but I made it through. I also came back to a promotion — whoop whoop! And, Hubs is now a full-time, full-benefits employee. We’re moving up in the world around here.

2. Glee – I watched the first two episodes of season 1 last night. Love it! I can’t wait to watch more. I don’t know if Netflix will get them here fast enough. I feel like I’ve lived in a TV void for a few years. (What have I been watching?!) On the to-watch list: Mad Men, Modern Family, Gossip Girl Season 3, Glee, Office Season 6, Friday Night Lights.

3. Eats- I’m so glad to not be on travel anymore because of this. I was so veggie deprived last week. It was suprisingly hard to find good eats. I was in some strange situations which left me restricted in what I could eat. There were a lot of forced convenience choices. My body rejoiced with the first green smoothie after a long week of carbs and starch.

4. Fall – My favorite season! It really feels like it now. So many excellent things are coming up soon and I can barely contain my excitement. I can’t wait until sweatshirts are necessary.

5. Runs – Yes, the cool weather is back which means I’ll be sweating it out on the streets of Old Town again soon. I just cannot run in the heat. I’m sure it’s possible, but I never want to dislike my workouts so I try to stick to other stuff during the summer months. Fall = the return of running!

6. Blogger Meet Up – I’ve never done this before, but recently Emily of The Front Burner moved to my hood. I’m new to her blog, but she seems amazing. I mean, I would be a bad blogger if I didn’t meet up with folks that live literally down the street. I suppose I’m just always worried people will think I’m loud or overly chatty. I’m just southern, y’all…

Okay, that’s enough for now. Hopefully I can grab some time tomorrow to sneak in an actually entry as opposed to a list. Oh, and HOW is it mid-September?!
