Snow Envy

Y’all, half my work team is in Boston where they are getting copious amounts of snow. DC has some cold misty drizzle. I would like to trade? I know they’ll probably be stuck in an airport for a while, but still… I like to read, I love magazines. I’m pretty sure I could post up fairly comfortably at an airport watching it snow (and getting paid for it) as long as I had something to read.

Okay, moving on from my serious case of snow jealousy! I had a serious reckoning moment yesterday morning with the scale. One-five-five showed up. Eeeeek! I keep writing in here about how I don’t like the number creeping up, I’m going to do something, yadda yadda yadda. But, why don’t I actually do something about it?

There was some serious grocery shopping done and I re-acquianted myself with sparkpeople. (I’m AlsoAnnaBanana if you want to look for me — my profile is super sad currently.) I adjusted my calorie intakes and work out schedule on there to realistic goals and ranges. And, taking some serious inspiration from Brie, I dove back into calorie counting and weight loss. I’m eating clean, eating less, and moving more again — and I already feel better. I’ve socked aside a little extra money for some new work clothes, so I plan to reward myself when I drop some of this pesky post wedding weight.

I also sat down with awesome co-worker Thea and started putting together a training plan for a half marathon. Since my goal race isn’t until Labor Day weekened, we’ve got some time to play with. Given my previous issues with my knees, a slow start is a good start. My current plan is to be comfortable running a 5k again by March 4th (six months from my race date). After that, for March and April I’ll be uping my runs from two a week to three a week with mileage ranging from 2-5 miles for each run. Then, come May we’ll sit down to map out my real training plan. I’m excited to enjoy running again. And, hopefully since I’ve aired all this out here, I’ll have some accountability.

I still need to talk about that awesome blogger badge that Kelly gave me, but my work computer doesn’t play as nicely with wordpress as my home computer, so that will have to wait for a few more hours. However, I did want to share with you two of my current favorite things (on my new eating plan)! They were on yesterday’s lunch menu and will feature again today – all I can say, is holy yum!

Up first: Pacific’s new “hearty carton” soups! I’ve had the Chipotle Sweet Potato and the Roasted Garlic and Mushroom Lentil, so yesterday I tried out a third new soup:


Lemongrass is one of my favorite ingredients, so I was immediately won over. The perfect amount of spicy heat, yummy flavors and little chunks of sweet potato left me very satisfied. Also awesome – these soups come in two serving cartons. They’re perfect for bringing to work. Use one serving, close it up, put it in the fridge, and use the second serving the next day. I bring my lunch to save $$$ and calories, but I hate all the prep work and hauling stuff in every day. This soup just made my life a lot easier!

My other love is something I’ve had before, but it has been a few months. Annie’s Organic Dressings are all around pretty tasty, but I have a profound affection for the Goddess Dressing.

This is definitely the perfect way to spice up a boring salad in my book. While the $3.99 price tag (for 8 servings) makes me flinch a little, I know I’ll eat my greens with this on top of it. So, I’ll pony up the money in order to keep my taste buds happy.

Snoooooow Jealous

My Parents’ have six inches of snow. No work Monday. No work Tuesday. No work Wednesday. It’s a winter wonderland 600 miles south of here!

I was hoping some of that snow would creep up here. Instead, it looks like we’ll get a dusting of snow and maybe a little layer of ice. The ice is my hope right now — I want to it get me a two hour delay at work tomorrow. You hear that Federal Government? A two hour delay would be awesome!

So, Hubs and I are doing what other delay hopefuls are doing: eating a DELICIOUS dinner (seriously, one of the best things our kitchen has ever produced), drinking a bottle and a half of wine (wait, most other people don’t do this?), and cleaning some shows off our DVR. I’m also jonesing for books!

After a day of reading facebook statuses about people suffering from cabin fever, my jealousy is at new levels! I wanna stay home all day, read, relax, sleep in, eat soup and grilled cheese sandwiches and occasionally take my little dog out for a snow walk. So, I’m living vicariously! I got three new books from the library today (Firefly Lane, Safe Haven, and Born to Run). Also, I want to buy copious amounts of books on Amazon — however that could be the wine talking. I suppose there are worse things to consider impulse buying?

Snow for the win

This post contains a great personal accomplishment and a whole lot of “failure.”

Friday was my regular day off. Tom was off to Vegas for his bachelor party. An inbound major winter storm had canceled my girl’s weekend to Annapolis. I figured the storm would keep me inside for the rest of the weekend, so I wanted to get out while I could. I woke up early enough to beat the snow, but late enough to sleep in. After suiting up in my winter weather gear, I hit the streets. Funny thing about practice runs outside – I don’t hit the wall that I do inside. I get continual bursts of energy. New songs on my ipod make me smile and my feet come off the ground higher. I get tired, my legs burn, my knees ache. But, I seem to not mind it as much outside. (Friday, my motivation was also fed by the fact that running would get me back inside and warm faster than walking would!)

I ran down through Old Town and wound up at the Waterfront as the first flakes started to fall. That was a really awesome experience. I was all at once overwhelmed by how beautiful weather is and the amazing things that I keep finding out my body can do. I turned and headed back toward my building with snow falling faster and thicker. It was really, really fun running in the snow. My total distance was 4.3 miles. My total time averaged into just over 11 minute miles — but that also includes the time I had to jog in place waiting for lights to chance. I swear, those things take so much longer when I’m out for a run.

However, since that awesome run, I haven’t laced my tennis shoes back up. The snow did come and in massive amounts. Old Town recorded right about 2 feet in a day and a half. I’ve never seen snow like that in my life before. So, instead of running, I went exploring. No tennis shoes for me and no nike+ strapped to my arm. Instead, I layered up and left in snow boots. Saturday I spent two hours walking around in the (driving) snow. Sunday, I was out for almost 3 and a half hours (part of that carrying groceries). Monday was another grocery store trip on foot. (Icy roads really deter southern girls from getting behind the wheel of their small, low to the ground, front-wheel drive cars.)

Miraculously, Tom was able to catch a flight back Monday night and only got back a day late. Shortly on his heels, the area was shut down again by ANOTHER storm that started last night and dropped another 10 and a half inches on us. Tom and I did a lap to the grocery store yesterday and helped free a stuck cabbie from a snow plow pile. (You know, I underestimated my efforts at the time — by my shoulders and arms are SUPER SORE today…) Last night we played in the snow and today we even went for a forty minute “jaunt” in our blizzard. It was a little nuts to say the least.

I have been off work since last Thursday and work was canceled for tomorrow. That’s a FULL week since I’ve been in the office. I feel like I should have logged more than one run. I’ve had the best intentions to run Monday, Tuesday and Today. Something about me just doesn’t want to go to the gym. It could be that my hours of traipsing through the snow have taken it out of me. Or, it might be the fact that I know I won’t feel that same enjoyment of running on a treadmill (and running outside is an entirely unrealistic proposition right now unless I want to go to the hospital for a break or sprain due to ice/packed snow). I really, really should run tomorrow.

However, Tom and I have a snow adventure plan and I honestly plan to let that take precedence. Running would be excellent for me. But snow like this doesn’t come around often. I intend to take full advantage of it while it’s here.

I don’t know if the By George 5k will still take place on Saturday. They emailed saying it’s up in the air. I know that if it does take place, I can run it so I’m not too worried there. It won’t be entirely pretty, but I’ll definitely finish. That has also killed my motivation to get another practice run in before the race.

So, here’s to the snow! Once it’s gone, I’ll return to my regularly scheduled runs. 🙂
