One Year Ago Today

On March 27, 2010, I married my best friend.

This is how we celebrated last year:

Aside from our cabin trip, we took a little night away to the Chesapeake Bay to celebrate our real anniversary! Oh, and it snowed?

Then, tonight, since our frozen wedding cake is at my parent’s house still in their freezer, we recreated it thanks to Whole Foods. One of the layers of our cake was yellow cake with fresh strawberry filling and Whole Foods had that today!

Last year:

And this year:
Yes, that’s right, we even dug out our toasting flutes!

How do I feel about the whole thing?
Pretty good! (Please note my very serious cake eating face.)

Happy Anniversary to the most amazing Husband! It has been a wonderful year and I cannot wait for what is to come in the years that follow. I’m so blessed to have a man who supports me so completely and knows everything about me and loves me anyway.

I can’t even see that far back…

Okay, so I’m a sucker for end of the year blog posts. I stole this from Brie. You should check out her responses too, cause I love her blog!

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
I got married! I also did a lot of traveling and saw a lot of places for the first time: Jamaica, Austin (Texas in general), New Orleans (Louisiana in general), and West Virginia. Oh, and I got my first ever massage on our Jamaican Honeymoon.

I also ran my first race on January 3rd. It was FREEZING!

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I did a pretty good job with my resolutions. I’m happy with this past year. And I definitely plan on making more resolutions. More on that in the next few days!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No one gave birth this year, but I have good friends due in April, May, June, and August!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Thankfully, no. I’ve been very blessed this year.

5. What countries did you visit?

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
A lot less student loan debt!

7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
March 27 – Our wedding date!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Completing two races and planning a wonderful wedding!

9. What was your biggest failure?
I missed out on several races. One I was registered for but decided not to run (as it was the day after we moved). I also intended to run several others but never followed through. I’m fairly disappointed with myself for not following through.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
A couple bouts with food poisoning and a variety of work out “ouchies” with a side of achy knees. Otherwise, again, I’ve been very fortunate.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My wedding dress! (I’d love an excuse to wear it again…)

12. Where did most of your money go?
My Student Loans and Hub’s tuition. More recently, to this little fellow:

Holidays 023

13. What did you get really excited about?
Getting married, going on our honeymoon, all my work travel.

14. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Our first dance song (David Gray’s This Year’s Love) or Don’t Stop Believing (specifically the amazing rendition from Dan and Kelly’s Wedding)!
Ridings Wedding 126

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
– happier or sadder?  Happier!
– thinner or fatter? About the same, maybe a little fatter (Sad smile).
– richer or poorer? About the same.

16. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Spring Variety 167
And, spending time with my friends. I love to relax and sometimes it turns me into a little bit of a homebody. So, if you’re reading this and you live in/around/near DC – let’s hang out!

17. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Waste time: on the internet, watching mindless tv, etc.

18. How did you spend Christmas?
Surrounded by my wonderful family in Atlanta!

19. What was your favorite TV program?
I enjoyed: Top Chef, Biggest Loser, Glee, Gossip Girl, and The Office.

20. What were your favorite books of the year?

I finished 62 books this year. Highlights included: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, the Hunger Games books, The Looming Tower (Lawrence Wright), Zeitoun (by Dave Eggers), and Omnivore’s Dilemma (Michael Pollan).

21. What was your favorite music from this year?
Sarah Barailles, Florence and the Machine, The Used, and mind-numbing top 40 music.

22. What were your favorite films of the year?
I only saw a few movies in theatres and none of them were anything to write home about, sadly.

23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 25 and spent the day at work. I had delicious, cheap Italian food and drinks with friends that evening. Hubs and I belatedly celebrated my birthday a month or two later with a fancy, wonderful dinner out.

24. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Paying down my loans farther. I wanted to be at a certain number by 1/1/11 and I’ll fall short of that. I’m making it my goal to have no more loans by the 27th birthday – ideally, though, the loans will be gone this time next year!

25. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Well, I’ve been trying to diversify my casual wardrobe and move away from all my college t-shirts. That’s an ongoing battle. It’s hard to buy casual clothes when you really need work clothes.

26. What kept you sane?
Hubs, my amazing friends, my parents, and good workouts.

27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010

I learned a lot this past year. I need to believe in myself more and follow through with challenges I set for myself (running: case in point). I also need to stop worrying about what other people do and don’t have. Someone will always have more than me and someone will always have less – I need to be happy with exactly what I’ve got.

All right, the Dawgs on on TV and I need to concentrate on football. We’re headed in to Old Town in a few hours and I can’t wait to chow down on some tapas.  There’s a delicious chocolate stout six pack in the fridge and a large saison for toasting with at midnight. This is certainly a fortuitous start to 2011. Happy New Years, Y’all!

Giving and Loving

This morning got off to a very uplifting start for me! I’ve been reading Caitlin’s blog ever since I discovered the world of healthy living blogs. She’s is the originator of Operation Beautiful and her book just came out yesterday! Operation Beautiful encourages everyone to love themselves and others, no matter how they look. It discourages the “fat talk” we’re all so guilty of and urges you to love yourself. I don’t think there could be a better message out there. In celebration of her book release, Caitlin put together an “All-Star” panel of bloggers to write a post each day.

Today’s post comes from Mama Pea (whose blog, in various iterations, I’ve also been reading since the start) and it almost had me weeping at work. A beautiful post from a wonderful writer and a beautful woman. (It also made me super thankful for my mother who also raised me in such a supportive manner!) All the Operation Beautiful love inspired me to jot a little note. I plopped a sticky note onto the bathroom mirror and wrote: “YOU look absolutely STUNNING today!” I also put the Operation Beautiful web address on there. You can never spread too much love!

In other news, Hubs and I are a day away from our trip back to Atlanta and I cannot wait! I actually got excited about doing laundry last night because it means we get to pack and leave soon. 🙂 Even though it will be a weekend of celebration and delight, I am planning to eat carefully. I need to remember my four pound goal for August. My Mom loves to take walks as well so I’ll pack my Garmin and she and I will hopefully go for a jaunt or two.

Monday night I hustled home from work and headed to the apartment gym. Remember that treadmill that made creepy noises and jolted me around while using the various inclines? Well that sucker is officially broken now. The read out just said “Elev(ation) Stall” and won’t come back down to flat or run the belt. That reduces our little apartment gym to just two treadmills. (Both of which were occupied on Monday.) I kinda wanted a little break anyway, so I hopped onto an elliptical and did a series of intervals that lasted 47 minutes and clocked 2.66 miles.

Tuesday I gave my knees the day off after they complained all Monday night and Tuesday during the day. (Hey, isn’t the elliptical supposed to be low impact? Apparently my body didn’t get that memo…) I did try a DELICIOUS new dinner combo though! I marinated some veggies (squash and mushrooms) in teriyaki sauce and then grilled them up on the Foreman. I paired this with a wrap made in heaven: tortilla, 1.5 slices of provolone cheese, two spoonfulls of pine nut hummus, and 1/8 lb of herb roasted turkey breast slices. Holy delicious. I think I moaned for a good five minutes to Hubs about the heavenly qualities of cheese and hummus melted together. So GOOD.

Today I plan to get in a half hour of cardio and restart my weight lifting. I abandoned it shortly after the wedding and my arms tell the sad tale. I want my definition back! (Also, I want to get married again — the day was so wonderful!)
(Please ignore my sheepish face, I was trying to avoid getting bubbles directly in my eye balls!)

Okay, I promise I’m done overloading your browser with super huge wedding photos now! I am in love with our photographer though and highly recommend Josh Weiss if you’re ever in need of photography in the Atlanta area.

Back to tonight: other plans include packing and a trip to the library. I finished The Lonely Polygamist (review coming soon) and got an email this morning saying they are holding four books for me. Holy moly! Time to get to reading.

Happy Hump Day Bloggies!

Married? MARRIED!

Long time no see huh? It has been equally as long since I’ve worked out, but let’s allow the past to stay in the past!

My absence and lack of exercise was all for a good reason: I went back to  Georgia for a week, got married, spent a week in Jamaica and am now adjusting back to the real world. I go back to work tomorrow and that means back to eating right too. The vacation is over (as much as I loathe to admit it).

My most exciting bit of news (work out/health food related) is about stuff! Yes, stuff! Tom and I are blessed with amazing friends and family who surrounded us with so much love and support for our wedding. It was one of the best nights of my life and so wonderful to just look around and know everyone there has love for you. Really cool. In addition to their love and support, people are generous. We have SO MANY new kitchen gadgets and toys in general that I can’t get over it.

We haven’t broken most of it out yet as we’re moving to a new apartment within our building in about two weeks. (Let the packing commence!) However, we have some seriously awesome goodies and I cannot wait to start cooking things with them — I’ve already been daydreaming! A friend also got us two blender ball smoothie/shake carriers (cannot wait to take green smoothies to work) and a GARMIN 305!! Whoop whoop! I’ll definitely be testing that bad boy out before the move. In fact, if the box is still unopened come Sunday night I would be VERY surprised.

More to come, soon!
